Buying and Caring for Backpacking Sleeping Bags

If you’re planning on hiking regularly throughout the year it’s more than likely that an all purpose three seasons sleeping bag is not going to be your only sleeping bag. It is quite possible you may need to have two or even three different sleeping bags in your collection. Each bag will be suitable for different times of the year and/or different climates.

Choosing a sleeping bag for hiking involves much more consideration than the average tent camper needs to put in. Tent campers who stay put or only go on day hikes aren’t going to need an ultra light weight sleeping bag that can keep them warm in sub zero temperatures. For a hiker who likes to wander up into the mountains during the height of winter this consideration is vital and may even be life saving.

Backpacking can be an excellent source of exercise, bonding time with your backpacking partner, and a stress reliever-assuming you pick your backpacking gear correctly and pack the right items. While picking individual brands can be time consuming, a basic understanding of the gear and techniques involved can really make the overall decision making process fairly easy.
